Developed from a fictional client brief centered on chef Tu David Phu, this San Francisco restaurant concept blends Vietnamese cultural influences with the urban character shaped by the client’s California upbringing. Inspired by his fictional culinary journey and connection to both Vietnamese heritage and West Oakland, the design combines warm natural materials, rich earthy tones, culturally inspired details, and contemporary elements to create a dining experience that feels welcoming, refined, and rooted in both heritage and place.
Design Concept
The lighting design for this restaurant tells a story of heritage and community, weaving together the traditions of Vietnam with the urban energy of West Oakland. Inspired by Chef Tu David Phu’s journey, the space glows with warmth and connection, inviting guests to gather and share in culture through both food and light. Natural daylight floods the restaurant, bringing openness and a sense of belonging. As the day ends, Vietnamese-inspired fixtures cast a soft radiance, keeping the space equally alive after dark. The bar lighting from the bar creates an intimate glow, drawing people into conversation, while the main dining areas remain airy yet connected, like a vibrant neighborhood gathering spot. In the private dining room, gentle, focused lighting creates a haven of closeness, perfect for meaningful moments. Through these layers of light, the restaurant embodies its dual identity; urban yet rooted, contemporary yet timeless; reflecting both tradition and the community it serves.
